You can almost see the destination — and you run like it's the last thing you'll ever do.
The State
Inside: you've built your trenches. You've built your infrastructure. Now you run. You run toward where you want to go with everything you have. There's hope burning inside you — this is close. If I keep running, I will reach the new territory. This isn't escape. This is running toward hope.
Outside: relentless motion. Unstoppable energy directed at something only you can see clearly. To others it looks like an indefensible amount of effort. Why are you working that hard? Because you know where you're going. The devotion isn't to the process. The devotion is to the arrival.
The Shadow
You absorb the cost of total commitment — there's nothing left in reserve. The shadow is refining devotion itself: the difference between devotion to process (which is a trap) and devotion to destination (which is a crossing). The hidden material is endurance under hope — the most demanding kind, because hope makes you feel the distance. Despair is easier to sustain than hope.
The Gift
Consecrated effort. The capacity to commit fully to something real — not from desperation, not from habit, not from identity. From clear-eyed devotion. At 1.6, devotion replaced identity. At 2.6, devotion was blind enthusiasm. At 3.6, devotion is earned, tested, built-on-foundation, eyes-open running. This is what real commitment looks like.
The Illusion
'I have to keep running.' The momentum is so powerful that stopping feels like death. The illusion is that the arrival depends on the intensity of the effort. It doesn't. You've already built the foundation, already flowed, already devoted everything. The destination is close. The illusion is that your running is what makes it close, rather than everything you already did.
The Crossing
Arrive. The crossing at 3.6 is recognising that the running has done its work. The territory you were sprinting toward is under your feet — you crossed into it while you were still running. The hardest thing at 3.6 is believing it's done.
Diagnostic
In a person
The entrepreneur in the final push before launch. Everything is devoted to the goal. Sleep, relationships, health — all secondary. They're not at war (3.3) or building in the dark (3.4). They can see the finish line.
In society
A liberation movement in its final phase — the goal visible, the effort total, the exhaustion real.
Social phenomena
The final push. The PhD in its last year. The athlete in the final stretch. The recovering addict in the first year of real sobriety. Startup culture at its most genuine.
Cultural handle
The final push. Almost there. All in.
